Tied for the lead in the clubhouse, "Bond" is called for the tie-breaker! Allen wins MVP!
The first annual Alumni/Active Invitational ended in dramatic fashion with a dead tie in the clubhouse. The team of Matt Allen, Jeff Mazur, Sam McPheeters & Mike Messer finished the day at (-9) only to have Kyle Stewart, Tim Stewart, Tim Mose & Nick Powers match the score (as the last team remaining). After a quick, and not very heated debate, it was obvious that the tie breaker would come down to whoever had the lowest bond number. McPheeters happened to be the lowest with #2257, and the team of 1993/95 put the boys of 2007-08 in their place.
Matt Allen went on to say, "It’s just too bad that we had to pull BOND on the actives. But we can't help that we are fifteen years older, and therefore deserve the Blue Jackets more than they do. Not to mention, they had a last minute replacement, who was a ringer and not a Phi . . . so that made calling BOND that much easier."
The field was strong all day long, and the bar was set high at (-8) by the first team into the clubhouse (Lynn Miller, Bill Payne, Greg Thackery, and Rusty Coats).
Four other teams matched their performance at (-8), including Team Crocker, Brett, Huffman & Bowlby. (Bowlby was a last minute replacement for Mark Feurebacher, the team's ringer; who called in sick the day of the tourney).
Chris Crocker had this to say, "Jake was awesome as a last minute replacement; but who knows what would have happened if "The Fever" would have been able to play. He was our best player by far, and it really hurt us, when he backed out at the last minute. It's hard to swallow, when we were only one stroke off the lead without him. I think the Jackets would have been ours if Mark had played. Oh well, better luck next year."
Allen Wins MVP Honors
MVP was a tough choice for the first tourney with 3 players playing very strong for the winning team. The title went to Matt Allen, due to his eagle chip on #11, and 22-ft Putt for Birdie on #18 (to take the lead into the clubhouse). Even though, Messer was a monster off of the tee box all day, and Mazur was Mr. Clutch on the Back 9; Matt's consistency and important shots down the stretch, helped him walk away with the title.
